Your voice and your cervix.
One of the elements I focus heavily on in my prenatal sessions with couples is the connection between vocalization and softening/opening of the cervix. Tension in your jaw, throat, face, or mouth, are mirrored in your pelvic region. Not to mention, but definitely to mention, that when you allow low tones and sounds to come through vocally, you are signaling to your brain to leave the fight or flight response behind and to drop into a parasympathetic state. We love a good parasympathetic birth space. Am I right? I am the ultimate birth nerd who has undeniably tested this hypothesis and I can stand behind it 1 million percent. Yep, that’s the hill I would die on as a birth worker. If you are able to allow the primal sound to move through you, you are literally allowing your pelvic floor to relax, making the process MUCH easier. In my childbirth/labor prep sessions, I always invite the parents to try this breathing technique with me. Sometimes it’s awkward, but all of the time, each one of us usually ends up feeling way more calm, relaxed, and present in the moment. My goal as your Doula is to present options, information, ideas, and tools so that when you are in labor, postpartum, or just living life in general, you have something to anchor into. Your voice is your best medicine in birth. Please don’t be afraid to use it. You are safe to take up space, let the energy be big, and express as you feel. I promise you won’t regret it.
